Midsummer/ApCo Audition Breakdown

SEEKING: 3 or 4 professional actors, 13 to 14 apprentice company actors, 1 music director/composer/expert string player. Performers must be playful, imaginative, and comfortable with audience interactivity. Shakespeare in the Park performs outdoors in temperatures that range from cool to very hot. Performers must able to work in cool, hot and humid conditions. Dressing rooms are not air conditioned. 
Paid professional AEA eligible roles:

  • Theseus/Oberon:  Male, 30s – late 40s.  AEA eligible role.  Powerful.  Potentially an alpha-male. Theseus is comfortable issuing orders and has a wry sense of humor.  He can laugh at himself.  This role must be comfortable with dance and movement.  As Oberon, he should have the ability to conjure a tempest, vocally dynamic and powerful.
  • Hippolyta/Titania:  Female, 30s – 40s.  AEA eligible role.  Strong, fiery.  An Amazon queen and queen of the fairies.  She is fierce, passionate.  Loves hard.  Sensual and connected to the natural elements of the world.  This role must be comfortable with dance and movement.
  • Egeus/Puck:  Either Male or Female.  40 – 50s.  AEA eligible role.  As Egeus, hot-tempered parent, politic.  Sees in black and white and enjoys the rules.  As Puck:  playful, quick-witted, potentially a tumbler.  This role will likely sing.

Apprentice company roles:

  • Peaseblossom/Courtier:  Female.  Teens – 20s. This role must be able to sing and dance with great proficiency.
  • Cobweb/Courtier:  Male.  Teens – 20s. This role must be able to sing and dance with great proficiency.
  • Mustardseed/Courtier:  Female.  Teens – 20s. This role must be able to sing and dance with great proficiency.
  • Moth/Courtier:  Male.  Teens – 20s. This role must be able to sing and dance with great proficiency.
  • Indian boy/Courtier:  Male.  Teens – 20s. This role must be able to sing and dance with great proficiency.

Lovers: Must be comfortable with on stage kisses/romance. Will also dance onstage.

  • Hermia:  Female. Teens – 20s. Passionate.  Feisty.  Youthful but confident the daughter of the noble Egeus.  Idealistic about love but knows her own mind.  Short stature.  In love with Lysander.  Must be comfortable with on stage kisses/romance. Will also dance onstage.
  • Helena:  Female. Teens – 20s. A young noblewoman of Athens.  Less confident than Hermia, but extremely determined and at times, funny.  The underdog of love.  Prone to lapses in judgement but quite lovable and sympathetic.  In love with and pursues Demetrius.  Perhaps taller than Hermia.  Must be comfortable with on stage kisses/romance. Will also dance onstage.
  • Lysander:  Male.  Teens – 20s.  A young nobleman of Athens.  A romantic and a bit rebellious.  While he is a defender of love, he is perhaps more prone to write poetry or music.  In love with Hermia, then Helena, then Hermia again.  Must be willing/able to engage in stage combat and comfortable with on stage kisses/romance. Will also dance onstage.
  • Demetrius:  Male.  Teens – 20s.  A diplomat or senator in training, Demetrius is confident and comfortable in the rules of the court.  He is strong-willed, obstinate and ambitious.  Follows the rules and is comfortable with a sword.  Must be willing/able to engage in stage combat and comfortable with on stage kisses/romance. Will also dance onstage.

Mechanicals: These roles will also likely dance onstage.

  • Nick Bottom:  Male, 20s.  (Potentially Apprentice or professional).  Brash, over-confident.  Cheeky, playful and loud.  The youth who thinks he knows it all.  Has an earthly, every-person quality about him.  Not very self-aware.  He sings and must possess comedic timing. 
  • Quince:  Female, teens to 20s.  A ringleader, capable, self-possessed, smart.  Perhaps with great dry wit, a nice foil to Bottom.  A female director, if you will.
  • Flute/Thisby:  Male or Female, teens to 20s. A less secure performer, more delicate or uncomfortable in their skin.  Comedic.  Sensitive.  Might have an interesting voice/timbre.
  • Snout/Wall:  Male or Female, teens to 20s. Curious and enthusiastic performer. Comedic.  An ability to play an instrument is helpful in this role.
  • Snug/Lion:  Male or Female, teens to 20s.  Snug isn’t the brightest bulb in the bunch, and/or may not be literate.  Comedic.   An ability to play an instrument is helpful in this role.
  • Starveling/Moonshine: Male or female, teens to 20s  A tailor, hardworking.  Doesn’t like violence or fighting.  Comedic.

Philostrate is likely to be played by the Musical Director. NSF is looking for a highly-skilled guitar player able to play Greek-style music, compose, teach, and perform.
